Hi! I'm Imile Wepener!
I'm an illustrator, artist, puppet maker and designer based in Kempton Park, South Africa.
I've been drawing everywhere and on everything since I was little. Becoming an artist was just inevitable. I went on to earn a BA in Visual Communication in 2014 and a BA Honours in Illustration in 2015 from The Open Window Institute in Pretoria, South Africa. Along with having my first solo illustration exhibition in 2015 and my second exhibition in 2018, I have also curated and taken part in a lot of group illustration exhibitions and I am extremely passionate about the communicative device of illustration.
My textured and colourful works explore and investigate unfolding narratives of fantastical beings in strange situations and environments, interweaved with little puns and jokes. The purpose of my works is examining the role of the authorial illustrator, a visual storyteller creating their own visual narratives. My works further set out to portray a lighthearted sense of whimsy whilst still embodying a deeper and darker metaphorical meaning to be interpreted and uncovered (or created) by the viewer.
